The personal trainers at South Carolina
Barbell are all skilled in training youth to adult
athletes in all sports. Athletic training programs
are specific to each individual athlete and focus on
age, sport, fitness level, flexibility and several other
factors. Although we are mostly known throughout
Columbia as a Strength Specific facility, we have worked
with many types of athletes from High School football
and basketball players to gymnasts, tri-athletes, and
marathon runners, as well as powerlifters, strongmen and
bodybuilders.
When beginning with a new client we ask
our selves a couple of key questions:
What does this athlete need?
Speed, Power, Strength, Endurance, Nutrition
Why are these things important?
All of the above factors must be
incorporated together to create balance in the athletes
skill advancement. Most coaches understand these
basic principles but due to the stresses of coaching
there is a huge gap in the ability to offer this balance
to all of the athletes on the team. Coaches must
spend their time working on the most talented
or "natural" athletes, as well as working on specific
aspects of the game, leaves the rest of the team with
sub par training by the coaching staff. Basically,
unless you or your child are "naturals" much of
the time you are forced to fend for yourselves! The gap
can be narrowed or even eliminated with a specialized
strength coach. This is where South Carolina Barbell and
Heavy Athletics come into play. Our strength coaches
have over 50 years of training and coaching experience!
We currently are in charge of the strength program for
the Optional Team at Carolina Gymnastics, as well as
working with individual football players, swimmers,
tri-athletes and cyclists.
What we Teach our athletes:
1. Proper techniques in all the basic strength
exercises. Proper form helps to enable the athlete to
get the most out of all muscles groups. This ALONE will
raise strength levels 10-15%!
2. Provide an atmosphere for each athlete to excel and
feel good about their personal successes.
3. Promote skills that each athlete will use the rest of
THEIR lives!
4. Instill belief in their abilities!
5. Teach injury prevention through proper training.
6. Teach how to eat properly and prepare for any
contest!
7. We offer Group training. We don't do one on one
because one on one does not prepare the athlete for the
real world of sport. When athlete's work together, they
prepare together, they compete together and they push
together!
What is the BOTTOM line?
Our job is to teach each athlete how to maximize their
potential. The average person never utilizes even 20% of
their available strength. Top athletes over time may get
